More than fifty major research
studies of the role of parents in education has shown that:
You don't have to invest a great deal of time. Half an hour a day reading and talking to your child will make a difference. A few minutes each evening skimming and discussing homework and the exams and other work he/she brings home will make a difference. A brief conversation now and then showing your child that his/her education is important to you will make a difference. An hour or so a year talking to you child's teacher will make a difference. A couple of hours a week or even once a month volunteering in your child's school will make a difference, and so will attending PTA meetings and supporting PTA efforts. In fact, one study found that simply having an active PTA in your school will increase student achievement.
The developmental guidance and counseling program is offered to all students in grades K-12. Professional counselors working with parents and staff assist the students to achieve success in school and in life. Counselors provide guidance lessons and activities, individual and group counseling, consultation with parents and staff, as well as crisis intervention. With the latter, referrals are made to outside agencies, if appropriate. The fundamental goal of the guidance program is to work within the educational system to help students apply responsible decision making skills in the personal, educational and career vocational areas. Evening programs for parents are offered at all grade levels. These include Active Parenting at the elementary level; Quest and articulation programs at the middle school; and a series of college and career programs, as well as orientation programs, at the high school level.
