The Ancient Egyptians developed one of our world's first and greatest civilizations.  Understanding hieglyphics is the reason we know so much about them.  This language was important to their economy, religion, military, government and few could write or read it.

To the Ancient Egyptians, preparing for the afterlife was extremely important. This is part of the reason they handled the dead body so carefully. It was an integral part of their culture and religious beliefs.
