ANCIENT ROMAN DIARY

6th Grade Social Studies
Mr. Wiegand

Goal: To create diary entries, as though you are a Plebeian living in ancient Rome. Demonstrate your ability to comprehend, analyze, and synthesize what life/culture was like during ancient Rome and evaluate the accomplishments and failures of 4 ancient Roman Emperors.


Questions to consider/answer:

Emperor – Would you liked to have lived during the time a specific emperor

ruled in ancient Rome? Why or why not?

Technology – What types of technology did the ancient Romans have and how

were they useful to you?

Activities – What did the ancient Romans do for fun? Explain in detail.

Occupations – What were jobs the ancient Romans performed and how did a

citizen’s occupation relate to their position in the social pyramid?

Customs – What were the ancient Roman’s traditions and why did they have

them?

Values – What was important to the ancient Romans? How can you prove it?

Religion – What did the ancient Romans believe in? Explain in detail.

Government – What types of rule did the ancient Romans have and why did it

change over time?

Language – How did the ancient Romans communicate and what was school

like?

3. Augustus, Nero, Trajan, Hadrian

Step 2: Brainstorm

In your group,

1. Discuss ideas for your diary

2. Assign roles for each group member

3. Design how the diary will be laid out

Step 3: Rough Drafts

Individually,

1. Type the rough drafts to all assigned components (don’t print)

2. Review, revise, and edit your draft (don’t print)

3. You CAN use “I” when writing a Diary entry

**Be sure all entries clearly explain the topic, have very specific

details, and provide accurate examples

Step 4: Peer Conference

2. Add/delete information as needed to all entries (don’t print)

3. ALL group members reads, revises, edits Parts of Culture entries

Step 5: Final Drafts
