Step 1: How To Write a Newspaper Article

Directions:  Complete the in-class activity on how to write a newspaper article.

1. The format will be explained and modeled, in detail, during class.

2. Remember, the ÒleadÓ should include who, what, where, when, and why.

3. The remainder of the article should include specific details on the topic.

4. DonÕt forget a creative headline.

Step 2:  PrintShop2/Microsoft Publisher

Directions:  Watch the demonstration on how to use either PrintShop2 or Microsoft Publisher.  Ask questions about how to use these computer programs.  Create an article as a class using the programs, add a picture/symbol, and cite the source of the picture/symbol.

Step 3: Quiz on the Nile River Valley

Directions:  Complete the quiz in class to demonstrate understanding of geography and culture of the Nile River Valley.  The vocabulary and information on the quiz will be helpful with the newspaper articles/project.

Step 4:  Create a Geography Article

Directions:  Write an article on the ancient EgyptianÕs geography.

Focus:  How it affected peopleÕs lives?

--Write this article with your groups.

--Edit and revise this article together.

--Be sure to use proper format.

Lead – Who/What/Where/When/Why

                           Paragraph – Topic/3 Details/Closing

 

Step 5:  2 Culture Articles (Rough Drafts)

Directions:  Each group member will write 2 articles about the parts of culture of his/her choice.  Group members must write different articles (no 2 articles can be written on the same topic).

         Focus:  Specific examples of the part of culture and detailed explanation.

         Possible Topics:

Step 6:  Peer Conference, Edit, Revise

Directions:  In your groups:

1. Peer conference for all culture articles (hint:  if you typed your articles,

group members can help edit and revise on the computer).

         Check:

                  A. Is there a Headline?

                  B. Does the ÒleadÓ include who, what, where, when, why?

                  C. Does the article have specific examples?

                  D. Does the article clearly and accurately present in the

information?

                                    E. Check capitalization, punctuation, and transitions.

         2. Edit and Revise your 2 culture articles (hint:  if you typed your articles,

                  this will save you time).

 

Step 7:  Final Drafts

Directions:  Make all corrections to your culture articles.

Step 8:  Pictures, Symbols, Citing Sources

Directions:  Include:

1. At least 1 picture or symbols for each article.

2. The picture or symbols should represent an aspect of the geography of

part of culture.

         3. Include any websites you used for pictures, symbols, or information at

                  the bottom of the article or under the picture/symbol.
