Choosing The Right Book For You
The Five Finger Test
Sometimes it is difficult to know if a book is going to be too easy or too hard to read just by looking at. You can "test" the book before you get frustrated by using your 5 fingers: |
- Choose a book that you would like to borrow.
- Find a page to read near the middle of the book with lots of words and few or no pictures.
- Start reading aloud in a whisper so you can hear the places where you are having difficulty.
- Put up one finger for each word you don't know. If you put up five fingers before you reach the end of the page, wave the book "good-bye,' it is not a good choice for right
 now. Try it again later in the year.
- If you know all the words, but are reading very slowly and decoding almost every word, you will not enjoy this book.
