Notes from the Nurse

Head Lice
Head lice (pediculosis) infestation is common in the United States among children 3 – 12 years of age. Head lice are not a health hazard and are not responsible for the spread of any disease. The most common symptom of lice infestation is itching. If you notice your child scratching his or her head often, especially behind the ears or at the nape of the neck, check for lice. Also, do frequent checks when you know of a lice outbreak in your child’s school.
Please see the instructions for treatment of head lice. You may also refer to the Classroom Lice Notifications that are sent home with your child for treatment instructions during a lice outbreak in school.
Please visit the following websites for additional information regarding treatment of head lice infestation.

With the H1N1 global pandemic, there are some things
that we are stressing to students to minimize the
spread of contagion. This includes frequent hand
washing, and covering their mouth or nose when they
sneeze or cough.
You can help as parents. Each morning please assess
your child’s health and listen to them. If your child
has any influenza like symptoms, they should remain
at home. These symptoms include:
• Fever greater than 100 degrees
• Sore throat
• Cough
• Body Aches
• Headache
• Chills
• Tiredness
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
Generally, your child may return to school when he/she
is free of signs of illness. However, there may be times
when it is necessary for your child to see your
healthcare provider before returning to school.
Any child with a fever above 100° F with flu-like illness
must stay home until at least 24 hours after their
fever is gone, without using fever-reducing
medicines like acetaminophen or ibuprofen; and,
regardless of whether or not they are using antiviral
drugs as the CDC recommends BEFORE returning to
school.
Please call me at 973 428 7583 Ext 2 if you have any
questions regarding a specific condition.
If your child has been diagnosed with a different
disease such as strep throat, bronchitis, etc., please
follow your health care provider’s recommendation as
to when your child may return to school. You must
provide a physician’s note with the diagnosis upon
return to school.
It is very important that I have current reliable contact
information to be able to reach each Eastlake parent. If
your child becomes sick or injured I will need to
contact you. You may contact me at Eastlake from 8:30
to 3:30 if you need to update your contact information.
