ITV CLASS
TO MEET
Through the marvel of Interactive Television
(ITV), students in the Italian 3 class see and hear
their classmates from Parsippany
Hills daily, but many have never actually met. In the interest
of practicing the Italian language
(and, to be sure, satisfying curiosities) the class has decided
to meet in its entirety, ělive
and in person.î
Class members from both sides of
town, along with teacher Miss. Donna Samko, will get to
know each other in a less formal,
but appropriate setting. The group has decided to meet at
The Olive Garden, an Italian restaurant,
where they will sample regional dishes and experience
the interaction that develops
in a traditional class. Of course, the sole language of communication
for the evening will be
Italian!
ITALIAN CLUB
So successful was last yearís
Italian Night dinner, that the Italian Club will again hold an evening
of food and fun this year.
Baked ziti, eggplant rollatini and freshly made garlic bread are but a
few of the aromas that will
fill the PHS cafeteria as club members dine and enjoy the company
of fellow Italian enthusiasts.
The date is to be announced, but a full house is all but guaranteed.
Tutti a mangiare!

STUDENT
EXCHANGE TO SPAIN
Fourteen PHS students will embark
on the trip of their lives when they, along with
organizers/chaperones Mrs. Heidi
Oshima and Mr. Jay Duhl depart for Spain on Nov. 6.
After sightseeing in Madrid, Segovia,
Toledo, Avila and El Escorial, they will head for the
city of Palencia (about two hours
north of Madrid), where they will live with local families for
two weeks. There they will
attend school and experience the lifestyle of their Spanish host students,
who are approximately the same
age.
While in the north of Spain, the group
will tour the medieval cities of Burgos, Salamanca and León.
Following the home stay, itís
back to Madrid for another two days before returning to Parsippany
on Nov. 27. The students
will see what life is like for a Spanish teen, learn other customs,
see important sites of European
history and, of course, continue their Parsippany studies.
The immersion in the culture and
the language are sure to have long lasting effects both linguistically
and in their understanding of
other peoples and cultures.
Our students will be reunited with
their hosts next Spring, when the Spaniards will visit Parsippany
for three weeks to practice English
and learn about American culture. They live with the families
of their former hosts and attend
PHS. More details about their visit to come!!
SPANISH
HONOR SOCIETY
The students of the Sociedad Honoraria
Hispánica are very busy this year applying their knowledge
and skills to some very practical
and useful situations. The group, under the direction of advisor
Mr. Jay Duhl, is in the process
of translating the PHS web site into Spanish (check it out: go to
the
PHS main page and click on ěversión
en españolî). Every Tuesday and Wednesday, SHH members
travel to Northvail elementary
school where they serve as teaching assistants in the districtís
elementary school Spanish program.
They also serve as tutors for PHS students in need of additional
help in Spanish.
SPANISH
CLUB
The Spanish Club is already getting into
full swing with a number of fun and exciting activities.
Advisor Mrs. Damaris Delgado is planning
an Immersion Day in December, when students will
travel to Union City, New Jersey.
In the largely Hispanic community, club members will spend
the day accomplishing practical, daily
tasks that can only be completed by speaking and
understanding Spanish. Following
the exercise, the group will enjoy a sampling of Hispanic foods
from all over Latin America, again communicating
in Spanish.
Club members will not only feast
on Hispanic foods, they will prepare it themselves during cooking
party (date to be determined).
The hands on experience in the Home Ec room will increase the
understanding of favorite dishes, as
well as pertinent vocabulary. ¡Todos a comer!
Come watch a Spanish language film on
movie night (date to be announced). See how movies made
in other countries rate compared to
Hollywood flicks. Refreshments will be available.
If TV is more your thing, join us when
we go to view a taping at Channel 47 (10 on Parsippany cable).
Be part of the studio audience and maybe
even be seen on TV! Date to be announced.
GERMAN

The German Department is able to offer a four-year
program because of ITV. German I and
German IV are taught by Frau Grossi via ITV
from Parsippany Hills High School.
German II and German III H are taught by Frau
Oshima.
The German Honor Society - die deutsche
Ehrenverbindung - will provide tutors for any German
student who is in need of extra help.
Other activities being explored are: a Geman movie evening
followed by discussion and refreshments;
a field trip into New York City including a visit to the
Goethe Haus and a Geman restaurant.
In December the German classes will go
on a field trip to Bethlehem,Penn. to visit the Christkindlmarkt
which is patterned after the Christmas
Market In Nürnberg. At the end of the year they will go to a
well-known German restaurant and sample
good German food.
Frau Grossi is planning a ten-day trip
to Germany during Spring break. Details will follow.
A German exchange student is studying
at Parsippany High this year. Claudia Hummel will share
her experiences with the German classes
for a cultural interchange.
