Senior Year Timeline

September

  • Meet with your school counselor to be sure that the colleges remaining on your list are appropriate to your academic and personal record.
  • Review your high school transcript with your school counselor to check for accuracy of courses, grades, rank in class, etc.
  • Meet with teachers of your choice to discuss letters of recommendation.
  • Visit college reps at your school.
  • Plan visits to college campuses if you didn’t get to them during the summer of if you want to return for a second time.
  • Register online for the SAT and SAT II subject tests.

October

  • Attend Senior Seminar with your guidance counselor for information on application procedures.
  • Continue to attend College Fairs to further investigate those colleges to which you will probably apply.
  • Finalize your list of colleges.
  • Obtain all necessary college applications.
  • Start writing essays for college applications.
  • Prepare information needed for college applications (brag sheets, activity résumé, etc.).
  • Send in Early Decision and Early Action applications.
  • Work hard, senior grades are important.
  • Take SAT if necessary.

November

  • Continue filing applications to colleges.
  • Continue to meet with representatives when they visit your school.
  • Take SAT if necessary.

December

  • File your last college applications.
  • Obtain the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form from your counselor or online (sign up for a pin number).
  • Receive Early Action/Early Decision l decisions.

January

  • File the FAFSA online as close to January 1st as possible.
  • Maintain a strong senior year.
  • Apply for scholarships.

February/March

  • Send mid-year reports if necessary.
  • Review SAR (student aid report) carefully.
  • Review financial aid packages.
  • Keep grades up.
  • Continue scholarship applications. Watch deadlines carefully.

April

  • Visit schools where accepted if necessary.
  • Contact financial aid office if you have any special financial aid circumstances.
  • If wait-listed, contact admissions office if you are still interested in attending.
  • Make final decision and mail your deposit to one school.

May

  • Contact colleges you have not selected to inform them that you plan to enroll elsewhere.
  • Take Advanced Placement Exams if applicable.

June
