MANAGEMENT: Head lice:

Information for parents:

Head lice (pediculosis) infestation is common in the United States among children 3 – 12 years of age. Head lice are not a health hazard and are not responsible for the spread of any disease. The most common symptom of lice infestation is itching. If you notice your child scratching his or her head often, especially behind the ears or at the nape of the neck, check for lice. Also, do frequent checks when you know of a lice outbreak in your child’s school.

Please see the instructions for treatment of head lice. You may also refer to the Classroom Lice Notifications that are sent home with your child for treatment instructions during a lice outbreak in school.

Travelers' Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a federal
agency in the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC investigates, diagnoses and tries to control or prevent diseases. They have a website that offers information to assist travelers and their health-care providers in deciding the vaccines, medications, and other measures necessary to prevent illness and injury during international travel.

The CDC offers important tips to help you and your family stay healthy while you are abroad. This includes information on communicable diseases specific to the area you may be traveling to, and the vaccines or medication to prevent them. Information is specific to the part of the world that you will be traveling to.

Please visit http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel when planning trips over seas. Their recommendations are available to assist you to keep your family healthy during your trip.

5th Grade Parents Updated INFO

Family Life Program

As part of our Family Life program, we are offering you the opportunity to preview the family life films and materials that we use in connection with our health curriculum. These materials have been approved by our Board of Education and are used as a basis for class discussion. Parent previews are on the following dates:

Parent preview for 5th grade will take place on Monday, April 23rd @ 6pm

Parent preview for 4th grade will take place on Wednesday, April 18th @ 2pm

Fifth grade students will be seeing their film and participating in discussion on Friday, April 27, 2012. Fourth grade students will be seeing their films and participating in discussion on Friday, April 20, 2012.

Amended immunization Requirements

The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services has amended the immunization requirements for all students born after January 1, 1997 and entering the 6th grade on or after September 1, 2008. these students will now be required to receive one dose of Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) given no earlier than the 10th birthday and one dose of a meningococcal containing vaccine (meningitis) such as the medically-preferred meningococcal conjugate vaccine. Any student who received a Td booster dose less than five years prior to entry shall not be required to receive a Tdap dose until five years have elapsed from the last DTP/DTaP or TD dose.

Written proof must be provided to the school nurse. As per state guidelines, failure to provide this information will exclude your child from school until vaccines are completed and proof presented.

5th Grade Scoliosis Screening

The annual screening of all children, age 10 - 18 for scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is mandated by the State of New Jersey. The goal of this program is early identification and treatment.

All fifth grade students were screened during the month of November 2011.

Should a spinal problem be suspected and further consultation recommended, you will be notified and requested to see your own physician for further evaluation.

I encourage parents to remind their children to evenly distribute the weight of backpacks and sport equipment bags as much as possible or alternate shoulders with single strap items. As this is not the cause of scoliosis, it is a pro-active way to ensure good posture.

Reminder to All Parents and Guardians

Re: Absence and Tardy

We need to know that every child is safe. Please call us when you know your child will be absent or late for any reason. We ask that you call before 8:30 AM on the day of the absence or lateness. The answering machine is always on! All students arriving late to school must sign in at the Main Office.

Emergency Card

It is very important that we have current and valid telephone numbers in order to reach you in the event of an emergency or illness during the school day. Keep us alerted throughout the school year of any changes.

Children Who Are Ill

Please keep sick children home until they are recovered and fever free for at least 24 hours (fever free without the use of fever reducing medication). When not feeling well, not only will your child be most comfortable resting at home, they will not be spreading illness to other students and staff as well. Do not send your child to school if he/she:

· Has diarrhea or vomited within the last 24 hours
· Has an excessively runny nose, sore throat, and/or cough
· Has a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more in the last 24 hours

If it is necessary for your child to take medication in school, we are required to adhere to a strict medication policy. Please inquire with the nurse regarding this procedure if the medication must be taken during school hours.

No child is allowed to carry any medication with them at anytime, this includes cough drops which could be a potential choking concern.

Immunizations

If your child receives any new immunizations throughout the school year please send a copy in to the nurse when the immunization is received. This will help to ensure an accurate health record for your child throughout their future school years.
