Management: Head lice information for parents

Head lice (pediculosis) infestation is common in the United States among children 3 – 12 years of age.  Head lice are not a health hazard and are not responsible for the spread of any disease. The most common symptom of lice infestation is itching.  If you notice your child scratching his or her head often, especially behind the ears or at the nape of the neck, check for lice.  Also, do frequent checks when you know of a lice outbreak in your child’s school.

Please see the instructions for treatment of head lice. You may also refer to the Classroom Lice Notifications that are sent home with your child for treatment instructions during a lice outbreak in school.

Please visit the following websites for additional information regarding treatment of head lice infestation.

Sixth grade requirements

Sixth grade and Central/Brooklawn Middle Schools are quickly approaching for our fifth graders. Recently the requirements for admission into sixth grade have changed.

Effective January 1, 2008, the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services adopted new immunization regulations (N.J.A.C.857-4). All children born on or after January 1, 1997, AND entering or attending Grade Six are required to receive one booster of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (Tdap), as well as one dose of meningococcal vaccine. The Tdap cannot be given prior to the child's 10th birthday. A minimum of five (5) years shall have elapsed from the last dose of DTaP/Td vaccine in order to receive the Tdap. Please note that this applies to students when they turn 11 years of age and attending Grade Six. Completion of these immunizations is required before entrance to Grade Six in September 2009 unless a student's birthday is after school begins, in which case the student may attend school and will be required to receive the vaccines as soon as they turn eleven (11) years old.

The Parsippany-Troy Hills School District strongly recommends that fifth graders receive a physical examination by their medical provider It is very important to share these findings with the school nurse, particularly if your child wishes to participate in sports at Central/Brooklawn Middle Schools. The physical must be done within 365 days prior to the first tryout. The form may be downloaded at http://www.pthsd.k12.nj.us (click on Student Health Form under Athletics). Please complete Part A: Health History Questionnaire and have your medical provider complete Part B: Physical Examination Form.

Please make copies of the completed forms for your records and submit the original forms to me as soon as possible. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Anglim at (973)429-7588 ext. 2.

Regarding Safety: Students should not arrive at school prior to 8:40 AM. (Our school day begins at 8:55 AM) If you drive your children to school, we ask that you do not park along the sidewalk drop-off areas until 8:40 AM. If you do arrive a bit early, please pull into a regular parking spot in the main lot, and wait with your child until 8:40 AM. You may then move your car to either the area by the blue benches, or the area near the nurse's parking spot, so as to drop off your child.
