As stated in the New Jersey Department of Education Core Curriculum Standards, "All students will be expected to develop skills in the use of information, up-to-date educational technology, and other tools to improve learning, achieve goals, and produce products and presentations. They will learn to develop, locate, summarize, organize, synthesize, and evaluate information. Users will be expected to use technological tools, such as telecommunications networking, for problem-solving, writing, and research." The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District is committed to the goal of having computer facilities used in a responsible, efficient, ethical and legal manner to advance the educational goals of the district. All users must acknowledge their understanding of the general policy as a condition of using the facilities.
Access is a privilege, not a right. Access entails responsibility. Computer technology is provided for students and staff to conduct research and communicate with others, understanding that communications on the network are public in nature. Access to computer technology is given to users who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner, just as they would be expected to act in any school environment.
Parental permission is required for student users. We do not publish any children's photographs on our web site. Student work is published on the web site using first names only.
The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District reserves the right to review and update these policies and practices as the need arises.
1) We now have four separate student Acceptable Use Policies, one appropriate for each grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12).
2) As students enter each of the four different levels, they will be given a copy of the appropriate level policy and the agreement form to be signed and returned to the student's school. Students new to the district will be given the form appropriate for their grade level.
3) At the elementary levels, the classroom teacher will review the policies each September.
4) At the middle school and high school levels, the student's homeroom teacher will review the policies each September in conjunction with a discussion of the Student Handbook.
5) In compliance with federal law, the district has installed a filtering system on all district teacher/student computers. The filter prevents students from being able to access, accidentally or intentionally, inappropriate, offensive, or pornographic Internet sites. Our filtering system carefully monitors all attempts to reach Internet sites and will not allow the computers to open unacceptable pages. Although no filtering system can claim to be 100% foolproof, it is a powerful tool for monitoring student Internet use and allowing students safe use of the Internet.
Please read carefully and discuss thoroughly with your child the policies and responsibilities of his/her grade level Acceptable Use Agreement.
