Resources on Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying

Social Networking Sites - February 2010

Recently two websites have come to the attention of PTHSD as they are gaining popularity with our youths: Formspring.me  and Chatroulette.com. They follow a long history of social networking sites that may pose risks, such as: chat rooms, Facebook, Youtube, and MySpace. Chatroulette poses specific risks as the site activates your webcam automatically and allows you to chat with anyone on the site. There appear to be no filters or limits regarding who is communicated with and what is seen utilizing web cams, therefore a large variety of live, socially inappropriate material can be viewed on this site.

In our opinion, with little or no supervision, chatroulette can be very dangerous. We advise you, as with other social networking sites, to put in place parental filtering, and ensure that you are able to view your child’s computer use at all times.

In PTHSD we have had filters in place to block these sites in our district for sometime now, but thought you should be aware of the recent popularity with youths so that you may take preventative measures at home.
